He informed me of the booming visual communications industry out in Dallas, and said there might be opportunities for me out there. I feel like the experiences Jack described to me could really benefit me, and push my work to new heights as I continue my path as a creative professional. I'll provide you with a link to my portfolio so you can get a feel for what I do.

Follow these steps to writing better emails:
· Name drop when you can or make the connection - which you did with Jack – good job.
· Why you are reaching out to ME? (or whatever professional you are specifically reaching out to)
o Right now, I'm not convinced that you know who I am, what the DSVC is or does, or why you are even sending me an email.
o When you reach out to a professional its good to cite their work or mention something about what they do as a professional
§ "I really love the work you did on project X - It's the type of work I would like to get into - and would like to get your advice"
§ "I understand that you work with XYZ, I am very interested in XYZ as well, and I would love to learn how I could get connected"
o This shows that you've done your homework and know to whom you are talking to - not sending out a cold call email - which I delete immediately.
· What is the purpose of this email? You mentioned that you were told there are opportunities here. Thats nice. There are lots of opportunities everywhere. You need to tell people what specific opportunities you are looking for.
o Are you looking for feedback on your work? Are you looking for a mentor?
o Are you wanting to connect with professionals in Dallas or elsewhere?
o Are you looking to get to know companies in Dallas?
o Are you looking to visit Dallas or come to the Student Show next year?
o Are you looking for internships or job leads?
· Do NOT just drop a link to your work. (tacky)
o You gave me no context into what work you do.
o You did not tell me what industry you are wanting to get into
o You didn't tell me ANYTHING about you either. Personality goes a long way in this industry.
o ASK if someone would be willing to take the time to look at your work first, or if you could send them a pdf/or video/etc (but make your website/contact part of your email sig)
· Thank people for their time
Here is an example of wrapping all these themes together into a concise, professional email:

My name is Grace Roff and I am a passionate budding visual development student looking to start my career in the animation and TV industry. I have been studying under the guidance of Jack Sprague at the Santa Fe University of Art and Design, and this May I'll have my BFA in Digital Illustration.
I genuinely enjoyed the poster you designed and illustrated for Vanessa Dewey's speaker meeting. Specifically, I really loved the narrative quality to it, as it is my passion to tell compelling stories with my artwork as well.
I am currently looking for internship or entry level job opportunities in the visual development/ concept art industry. I have been applying to many studios in LA, and I would like learn more about getting connected to professionals out in that area. If you have the time to review my portfolio and offer me any advice, I would be deeply grateful.
